Who Services Your BESS Plant?

How did you consider service when contracting your EPC or developer-led BESS project?

In my opinion, investors should evaluate their service strategy early in the project, not after the main contract is signed.

A utility-scale BESS plant has equipment from multiple manufacturers. DC blocks, Power Conversion Systems, MV/HV infrastructure, Power Plant Controller and SCADA. Each equipment requires service.

One option is separate service level agreements with each equipment manufacturer or their preferred local partner.

But when something goes wrong, who diagnoses the root cause? Was it the PCS, the DC block, the controls, or the operator’s fault? With multiple contractors, finger-pointing starts before troubleshooting does.

An alternative. One service partner responsible for the complete BESS plant.

A capable service partner, trained by the equipment manufacturers, can service all major systems and keep a sound spare part strategy for the complete plant. They may use subcontractors for specialized tasks, but the accountability sits with one partner.

One phone call. One responsible party.

Some asset owners may want to handle part of the service themselves. That can work, as long as responsibilities are clearly coordinated so nothing falls between the chairs.

For asset owners evaluating their service strategy, this is worth serious consideration, especially when considering performance and availability guarantees.

What’s your experience with the service of BESS equipment?
